Russell Maio
Russell’s Corner Barbershop
Augusta, GA – Entered into rest Friday, July 30, 2010 at Doctors Hospital, Mr. Russell Maio, 74, beloved husband of Sandra M. Maio.
Mr. Maio was one of eight siblings born in Sicily. At 19 he set sail for the United States, arriving in New York. He opened his first barbershop in 1964 in Jamestown, NY, where he stayed for more than 30 years. He came to Augusta in 1986 on vacation, at which time he and his family liked the area and weather so much that they decided to move here permanently. Mr. Maio owned and operated Russell’s Corner Barber Shop in Martinez. He was a member of the Italian American Club and was a Roman Catholic. Mr. Maio’s favorite pastimes were spending time with his family, being at the lake and fishing on his boat. Russell has always said “I’m a barber. This is what I do and I love it. I say - don’t blame anyone because you have nothing. It’s your choice. There is no reason not to work in this country. Try anything, but do better everyday than you did the day before.”
Family members in addition to his wife include daughters: Stacey L Richards and husband Richard of Martinez, Kathy Jo Maples and husband Jason of Greenville, SC; sons: Russell Maio, Jr. of Greenville, SC, James Maio of Hawaii, Nick Maio of Martinez; six grandchildren: Mark Maio, Justin, Matthew, and Alex Richards, Ben and Sydney Maples.
