Ruth Hughes Cooper

Augusta, GA – Entered into rest Tuesday, February 10, 2015, Mrs. Ruth Hughes Cooper, 92, wife of the late Mr. George N. Cooper.

Mrs. Cooper was born in Berrien County, GA but lived in Augusta for the past 70 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Augusta and a former member of Central Christian Church of Augusta.

During World War II, she and her sister left home (Nashville, GA) to work for Bell Aircraft as riveters on the B-29 bomber assembly line in Marietta. At war’s end, she came to Augusta to visit with her Aunt and met George Cooper who was returning from military service, and they married a short time later.

Ruth played Augusta City League basketball for the American Legion Team in her 20’s and was always proud of her accomplishments playing for this team. She enjoyed shooting baskets in her back yard into her 80’s. She spent many hours sewing for her family and was regarded as a fine seamstress. Known for her good cooking, she was often asked to bake cakes and other dishes for church and family gatherings. Ruth was a loving mother, wife and friend to all who knew her. She was known for her quick wit and sharp mind. Often complimented for her outward beauty, she was also known for her inner beauty and giving heart. All who knew her will miss this beautiful soul.
