Mr. Sibley was born in Norfolk, VA and lived in Augusta for the past 63 years. He was responsible for the implementation of the first Georgia Public Defenders Office for the Augusta Circuit. He was a 1963 graduate of the Academy of Richmond County and 1968 graduate of Augusta College. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree with a Major in Psychology and a Minor in Sociology. Mr. Sibley, a 1972 graduate of Mercer University School of Law, received a Juris Doctorate Degree, was on the Deans List, Mercer Law Review, and recognized as Most Outstanding Senior. He was a member and past President of Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity. Mr. Sibley began his law career in Atlanta as an Associate in Law with Hansel, Post, Brandon & Dorsey. In 1974 he returned to Augusta and began serving with the Augusta Judicial Circuit District Attorneys Office as Assistant and Chief Assistant District Attorney. In 1976 he was Assistant Solicitor General with the Richmond County Solicitor Generals Office and also in private practice at Glover & Sibley Law Firm. From 1981 to 1988 Mr. Sibley was District Attorney in the Augusta Judicial Circuit District Attorneys Office. He returned to private practice in 1989 until 2002. Since 2002 until the present he served as Chief Public Defender for the Augusta Judicial Circuit Public Defenders Office. Mr. Sibley was a member of the Augusta Bar Association, Georgia Bar Association, Georgia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and Georgia Association of Circuit Public Defenders. He was recognized in Who’s Who in Georgia, Who’s Who in the South, Outstanding Young Men of America, and Augusta Legal Secretaries Association Boss of the Year.
Family members in addition to his wife include his step-son: Jerry C. Tuten II cousins: Don and Helen Newton, Mike and Gaylel Newton, Annette and Andy Burgamy, Randy and Kay Newton, Benny and Susan Sibley; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Jonathan and Grace Baynham, Brandon and Diane Knight, Buddy and Susan Cooper, and Ronnie and Fran Herndon.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 9, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son with Rev. Velda Schirhart and Sheriff Greg Coursey officiating. Interment will follow at Westover Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Jonathan Baynham, Brandon Knight, Buddy Cooper, Ronnie Herndon, Jack Long, and Jack Minor, Jr. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Augusta Bar Association and the Augusta Circuit Public Defenders Office.
