Augusta, GA - Samuel Wallace (“Pete”) Wardlaw, Jr, son of the late Samuel W. and Iris G. Wardlaw and beloved husband of 61 years to Billie O. Wardlaw, went home to be with Jesus on Sunday, June 11th.
A native of Augusta, “Mr. Pete” served his community for over 60 years in the grocery business with A & P and Bi-Lo. Mr. Wardlaw was a life-long member of First Baptist Church of Augusta, where he was baptized into the Life of Christ in 1938. Throughout his life, he was active in Sunday School, most recently being a member of the George Ballentine Sunday School Class. He served as deacon for many years, and was recently given the honorary status of Deacon Emeritus by the Body of Deacons. During his retirement years, he found great joy in volunteering with the Interfaith Hospitality Network (Family Promise) as a driver and a receptionist, and in volunteering with his church as a switchboard operator and as a Tuesday Morning Benevolence Team leader. Also, he was a member of the Men’s Conversational Prayer Group at First Baptist for many years.
Pete Wardlaw was a loving and wise husband, father, brother, uncle and friend. Besides his wife, he is survived by his two sons: Samuel W. (“Bud”) Wardlaw III and David O. Wardlaw; and by his furry feline pal, “Oscar.” Additional survivors include his two sisters: Sue Perry and Louise Cook (Dan), as well as numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
A service of remembrance and celebration will take place in the Storey Chapel of First Baptist Church, 3500 Walton Way, on Thursday, June 15th at 2:00 pm. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the George Ballentine Sunday School Class and the Men’s Conversational Prayer Group. The family will receive friends during the hour prior to the service. The family request memorial gifts be made either to the First Baptist Church Benevolence Fund or to CSRA Parkinson Support Group; 3740 Pebble Beach Drive; Martinez, GA 30907.
