Samuel Randolph Penn, MD
Augusta, GA – Entered into rest Saturday night March 16, 2013. “Randy” was born in Roanoke, VA in 1923 where he resided until he left home to attend the University of Virginia. At the University, he completed his undergraduate and Medical School Training. In 1946, he went on to complete an internship at NY Hospital,-Cornell Medical Center. In 1947 he received an honorable discharge from the United States Navy after his service as a Navy Surgeon. Following the Navy he was at Massachusetts General, - Harvard in Boston where, he completed 46 months of training in General and Thoracic Surgery. Upon completion of training, he opened his practice in Waynesboro, Virginia. He faithfully served his community for 35 years. After retiring he made his home in Augusta, GA. He was blessed with incredible surgical talents, and a unique gift of conversation. His hobbies included wood working, golf, art and being with his friends and family. He never met a stranger. The family would like to give a special thanks to the employees of the Augusta Country Club and the Village Deli, two of his favorite places. He was not a customer he was a friend.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Elizabeth Carter Penn. He was survived by his two sisters Nancy Tiller and Mary Lee Garvin his two daughters, Lane Penn Garrett (Hank) and Elizabeth Penn Cordell. He was also survived by his four grandchildren Henry Burt Garrettt IV, (Laura), Carter Garrett Welsh (Tommy), Clayton West Cordell III (Gwen) and Elizabeth Cordell Doughtry (Drew) and 11 great grandchildren. He was loved by all and will be very much missed.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at 3:00 P.M. at the Church of The Good Shepherd, with The Rev. Robert D. Fain officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital at 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or to the American Cancer Society at PO Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK, 73123-1718.
The Family will receive friends following the service at the home of his daughter, Lane Penn Garrett; 825 Camellia Road, Augusta, 30909.
