Sandra Hanson Griffin, 84, entered into peaceful rest at home on April 15, 2022.
Sandra (Sandy) was born in Atlanta but lived most of her adult life in Augusta. Sandy was the daughter of the late James Clyde Hanson and the late Louise Wynn Hanson. She graduated from Avondale High School and Georgia Teacher's College (currently Georgia Southern University). Sandy retired after 30 years of teaching, mostly 3rd grade, at her beloved National Hills Elementary School.
Sandy loved her family and friends. She also loved to travel, and she loved to join and serve. She enjoyed being a part of Alpha Delta Kappa teacher's sorority, Alpha Epsilon Chapter where she was past president. She loved her garden club and most especially her volunteer work along with her husband with the University Hospital Volunteer Board where she served as past president. She was a member of Georgia Retired Teachers.
Sandy was a member of First Baptist Church Augusta and joined her sister's Sunday School at Oak Grove United Methodist Church when she moved to Decatur a few years back. Her greatest love was her love for her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As a member and later leader of Bible Study Fellowship, she credited her involvement in this international Bible study with a deepening faith and commitment to knowing and following her Lord.
Sandy was predeceased by her husband of 47 years, Norman (Skeeter) Griffin, Jr., as well as her sister Shirley Overstreet and brother-in-law Spencer Overstreet, her sister-in-law and brother-in-law Mary and Bob Marshall, and nephews Michael Overstreet and Craig Griffin. Survivors include daughter, Lisa Arnold (Randy) of Evans, son, Dr. David Griffin of Carrollton, grandchildren; Elizabeth Griffin of Atlanta, Joshua Arnold of Evans, Kate Griffin of Carrollton, and Lydia Griffin of Carrollton, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Joyce and Bill Griffin of Pembroke, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. Special thanks to her care giver, Vera Lewis along with Angie Reed, Lorraine Haize, and Helen Jonas.
There will be a memorial service on Saturday, April 30, 2022 at 11:00a.m. in the Storey Chapel of First Baptist Church of Augusta with Dr. Will Dyer and Jim Overstreet (nephew) officiating. The family will receive visitors at 10:00am. in the lobby outside the chapel before the service. Interment will occur immediately following the service in Westover Memorial Park.
