Augusta, Ga - Sandra Jo Hartman was born June 11, 1936 to Howard E. and Erma E Hartman, in Franklin County, Iowa. As a child, her homes included Sheffield, Iowa, Fairfield, Alabama and Wheaton, Illinois. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Merchandising from Texas Woman’s University, Denton, Texas. Her yearbook lists many clubs including: Professional Business, Chorus, Bridge, Adelphian, Counselor, and Stunts. She worked in various department stores in the Midwest until becoming a Home Economics teacher at Monmouth High School, Monmouth, Illinois. It was there that she met and married Kenneth W. Painter of Monmouth, Illinois, on June 11, 1960. Soon after, they moved to Clinton, Iowa where their children, Kimberly (Painter) Jacklin and Samuel Painter were born. Relocating to Albany, Georgia, in 1967, Sandra continued her involvement with church, community and social organizations, in various leadership roles. She was a soprano in each of her church’s choirs including: Christ Episcopal Church, Clinton, Iowa; St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church, Albany, Georgia; Christ United Methodist Church, Albany, Georgia; and St Simons United Methodist Church, St Simons Island, Georgia. She served on Cursillo and Walk to Emmaus renewal weekends, as well as, behind the scenes for Kairos Prison Ministry. She was active in: Junior Women’s League in Clinton and Albany; P.E.O in Albany, St Simons Island (past president) and Augusta, Georgia; and Women’s Aglow, Augusta, Georgia. Her real passion was in the fiber arts. She was a costume seamstress for the Albany Little Theater and produced many dresses for herself, daughter, granddaughters and others. She loved cross-stitch, embroidery, crochet and mostly knitting, keeping her fingers nimble and productive. She made hundreds of hats for cancer patients, premature babies, sailors and soldiers. Her marriage of 40 years ended with Ken’s death in 2001. She remarried, Herman Gilbert (Gil) Walker, of St Simons Island and friend of Ken’s, on April 30, 2006. Her time with Gil was short, ending with his death on October 22, 2008. She moved to Augusta, Georgia in 2010 to be closer to family and for care for continuing health issues. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Augusta, Georgia. She loved her God, her family and her country. She lived a life of serving others and, toward the end, was looking forward to being with her Savior, Jesus. She died peacefully on October 15, 2017, Augusta, Georgia, from complications of diabetes. She was loved, admired and will be missed by many.
Family members include her daughter: Kimberly Painter Jacklin and husband Victor; son: Samuel Painter and wife Mary Lindsey Painter; and grandchildren: Lindsey, David, Christena, Virginia, and George Painter, and Isaac Jacklin. She is preceded in death by her first husband, Kenneth Wyverne Painter, and by her second husband, Herman Gilbert Walker.

The funeral service will be Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at 5:30 P.M. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son with Rev. Ron Fearneyhough officiating. Burial will be Thursday, October 19, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. in Oglethorpe Memorial Gardens, 5775 Frederica Rd, St. Simons Island, GA 31522.
