Dr. Sherrill B. Kelly
With deep sadness and sense of loss, the family and loved ones announce the passing of Dr. Sherrill Burriss Kelly, who was always there for us, on April 4, 2011. Sherrill was born in Augusta Georgia, March 24, 1936, where he attended the Medical College of Georgia and became Board Certified in Family Practice.
His long career in the medical profession took him from the Indian pueblos of Santa Fe, New Mexico, private practice in Forsyth, Georgia, and then to his beloved adopted country of Panama where he practiced medicine for 15 years. Dr. Kelly spent the last years of his career in Naples, Florida, where he was among the first of four physicians to provide medical care in the Naples Community Hospital Urgent Care Center, which marked the beginnings of the North Naples Community Hospital.
His life was blessed with keen intellect, an extraordinary grasp of the infinite field of medicine, life-giving and life-saving-service to countless patients. Sherrill will be long remembered for his for continuous research, expansive knowledge, dedication and kind compassion with which he served his patients, his family, loved ones and friends. He had an extraordinary gift of uplifting the spirits of everyone with his delightful unique sense of humor. He will be deeply missed.
He is preceded by his parents, William Joseph Kelly and Louise Davis Kelly. He is survived by his daughters, Leslie Thomas and Jenna Kelly of Aspen, Colorado and Carrill Kelly of Washington D.C., three grandchildren, Tyre Thomas, Landon and Catherine McKenzie, and his brothers, William Davis of Anderson, South Carolina and Richard Joseph of Yardley, Pennsylvania. Sherrill and his brothers were valedictorians of Academy of Richmond County in Augusta.
Sherrill was a devoted father and his beloved daughters and family were at his bedside throughout his illness. The family is very grateful to all the physicians and nursing staff at the North Naples Community Hospital and Avow Hospice who dedicated their skills to easing him through a difficult and fatal cancer illness.
A visitation will be held for Dr. Sherrill Kelly, of the Baha'i Faith, on April 14, 2011 from 6 pm to 8 pm at the Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors, 214 Davis Road, Augusta, GA.
A service will be held on April 15, 2011 at Hillcrest Memorial at 1:00 pm, 2700 Deans Bridge Road, Augusta, GA.
