SISTER ANNE BROTHERTON, SFCC
Sister Anne (Richard) Brotherton, SFCC, 90, died on June 22, 2018 in Augusta, Georgia. Sister Anne was the daughter of the late Charles Crombe Brotherton, Sr., and Annie Lenz Brotherton of Augusta and the sister of the late Charles Crombe Brotherton, Jr., and William James Brotherton. She is survived by her brother Richard Lenz Brotherton and his wife, Ann Lawless Brotherton, and numerous nieces and nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.
Sister Anne graduated from Mt. St. Joseph Academy in Augusta and joined the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1950, transferring to the Sisters For Christian Community in 1975. She received a doctorate degree in Cultural Sociology from Fordham University while teaching in colleges of the City University of New York. Her long teaching career included parochial schools in Marietta and Savannah, Ga., Aquinas High School in Augusta, Fontbonne College in St. Louis, the Martin Luther King, Jr., Center for Nonviolent Social Change in Atlanta, and Georgia and Augusta State Universities. From 1978 to 2000, she was a faculty member in the area of Sociology and Ministry at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, CA, the school awarding her a Doctor of Divinity Degree honorus causa in 2011. Throughout her long career, Sister Anne worked for nonviolence and peace and for equal rights for women in church and state.
