Mr. Spencer Edward Mercer, Jr.
Grovetown, GA – Mr. Spencer Edward Mercer, Jr., 84, of Augusta entered into rest Monday, January 31, 2011 at the V.A. Hospital.
Mr. Mercer was born February 22, 1926 in Colquitt County. He was in the military from 1945 to 1947, serving in North Africa and began farming upon his return. Mr. Mercer worked at Hawthorne Aeronautics and Commander Air Service as he continued to farm on the side.
He began traveling with Daniel Construction, eventually settling in the Augusta area. He enjoyed planting a garden each year and growing vegetables which he shared with family and Sunday School friends. Mr. Mercer was a member of National Hills Baptist Church.
Family members include his wife, Mary Mercer; children: Spencer E. Mercer III (Nita) of Augusta, Susan Mercer Jackson (Tim) of Valdosta, Zeke Mercer (Angel) of North Augusta; grandchildren: Slade Mercer (Stephanie), Cassie Mercer, Cody Mercer, Anna E. Mercer, Samuel Mercer, Jennifer Reaves (Keith), Reid Jackson (Kelly), and Lee Jackson (Annie) and 6 great grandchildren. Mr. Mercer was preceded in death by his parents: Spencer E. Mercer, Sr., and Nancy Gay Mercer; one sister, Gladys Mercer Clinton; two brothers: Charles W. Mercer, Glenn Mercer: and one nephew, Charles W. Mercer, Jr.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, February 5, 2011 at 1:30 P.M. at the Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery, Moultrie, GA. Baker Funeral Home of Moultrie will be in charge of the final arrangements (229-985-2002).
