Steven T. Eveker
Augusta, GA – Entered into rest Wednesday, November 22, 2017, Brigadier General Steven Thomas Eveker, Sr., 53, loving husband of Julie Eveker.
Steve was born in Saint Louis, Missouri and moved to Coral Springs, Florida when he was eight years old. He excelled in athletics in middle and high school, especially in track and cross country and earned an athletic and academic scholarship to Campbell University in North Carolina after his graduation from Coral Springs High School in 1982. At Campbell, he joined the Army ROTC program and graduated as a Distinguished Military Graduate in 1986 and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Infantry in May 1986. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government from Campbell University and a Master of Science in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, PA.
Following graduation from Campbell University, Steve spent the next five years on active duty serving with the 1/509th Airborne Infantry Battalion and with the 24th Infantry Division serving in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
He left active duty in 1991 after serving in Operation Desert Storm and began his career as a petroleum marketing executive working for several prominent petroleum refining companies including Coastal Refining and Marketing, CITGO Asphalt, Premcor Refining (formerly Clark Oil & Refining), Michigan Marine Terminals, Blacklidge Emulsions, and Bitumar, Inc. He was also the President and CEO of Eveker Diversified Industrial Services. In conjunction with his civilian career, Steve continued to serve in the United States Army Reserve in numerous command and staff positions with Army Reserve units throughout the United States. His most recent assignment was the Deputy Commanding General for the 377th Theater Sustainment Command in Belle Chase, LA in July 2017. Prior to this assignment, he served in a dual-hatted assignment as the Commanding General, Deployment Support Command (DSC) in Birmingham, Alabama and the Deputy Commanding General for Mobilization for the Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command (SDDC) at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois. Prior to taking command at the DSC, he was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom with ARCENT/3rd Army serving as Chief of Staff for ARCENT Support Element-Afghanistan (ASE-A) in Kabul, Afghanistan.
He has served as Brigade Commander for the 209th Regional Support Group in Kansas City, Missouri; Deputy Exercise Director for the 2nd Brigade, 75th Division at Fort Dix, New Jersey; Deputy Commanding Officer for the 642nd Regional Support Group in Decatur, Georgia; and Assistant G-3 for the 84th Division (IT) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He also served with the 108th Division (IT) as a Brigade S-3, Battalion S-3, and many other assignments.
In 1990, he was promoted to the rank of captain and was branch transferred to the Quartermaster Corps and service with the Division Support Command (DISCOM) of the 24th Infantry Division (Mechanized) during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. In 2006, he was selected to serve as the Battalion Commander of the 352nd Corps Support Battalion (CSB) and deployed the unit to Mosul, Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Combat Action Badge for his combat leadership of the unit.
Steve’s military education includes: Infantry Officer Basic Course, Quartermaster Officer Advanced Course, Joint Fire Control Course, Combined Arms and Staff Services School, Command and General Staff College, Defense Strategy Course, Reserve Component National Security Course, Defense Support of Civil Authorities Course and the United States Army War College. He is a graduate of the United States Army Airborne, Air Assault, Ranger, and Jumpmaster Schools and received a Master of Strategic Studies in 2012 from the Army War College in Carlisle, PA.
His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit (3 awards), the Bronze Star Medal (two awards), the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal (six awards), the Army Achievement Medal (three awards), the Afghanistan and Iraqi Campaign Medals, the Ranger Tab, the Senior Parachutist Badge, the Air Assault Badge, the Combat Action Badge, and the Expert Infantryman’s Badge.
Steve truly cared about soldiers. He was the epitome of a servant leader and referred to himself as a “muddy boots soldier.” Steve was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of American Legion Post 192 in Evans, GA. He was recently honored as a Campbell University Distinguished Alumnus of the Year. He told captivating stories and always had a new joke to tell. He was a friend to all and truly believed that it was more important to give than to receive. He was a down to earth and honest leader and his example is his legacy. His many friendships span the globe and he will be missed by all, especially his wife, children and family.
He is survived by the love of his life, best friend, and wife Julia (Hoffman) Eveker and their two children, Evan and Sarah. He was also the proud father of Shea (Eveker) Hoffpauer (Nick) of Atlanta, GA and Steven Eveker, Jr. of Bayfield, CO. He was the son of the late Donald and Katie Eveker of Cape Coral, FL and the brother of Sue (Eveker) Baker and Anne (Eveker) Burn (Greg) of Fort Myers, FL. He was an honored husband, father, son, son-in-law, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and dear friend to many. His life and service touched all who knew him and the world is a better place because he was here.
A funeral Mass will be Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church with Fr. Paul Hurley, Fr. Brian Ray, and Fr. Michael Roverse celebrants. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
