Terry O. Childers, Sr., LUTCF
Augusta, GA – Received his crown of righteousness, November 5, 2013, Terry O. Childers, Sr., LUTCF, 66, husband of 45 years to Lynne B. Childers.
Mr. Childers was drafted by the New York Yankees in the first Major League Baseball draft in 1965 out of the Academy of Richmond County; he did not sign and went to college. He graduated from South Georgia College, as well as Georgia Southern University where he received his Master’s degree, and was drafted by the Chicago Cubs. He played eight years of professional baseball in the Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers, and Montreal Expos organizations. After his professional playing career, he began a coaching career at the collegiate level. He received Coach of the Year honors at South Georgia College and Augusta College. Mr. Childers retired as a Major from the Georgia Army National Guard, serving for 21 years. He was also a graduate of the Command and General Staff College. Additionally, he was a veteran of Desert Storm. He was a board member of the Boy’s Club of Augusta and a member of the Georgia Sheriff’s Association. He was in the life insurance business for over 30 years with Mass Mutual, and established the Childers Agency in 1998. Baseball was Mr. Childers’ passion, and his 4 sons followed in his footsteps, all playing professionally as well. Collectively, they achieved 2 national collegiate championships, 5 high school state championships, and 2 sons who pitched in the major leagues. He was loved and admired by many and adored by his wife and children.
In addition to his wife, family members include sons: Terry Childers, Jr. of Augusta, GA, Scott Childers (Kristie) of Helena, AL, Jason Childers (Stephanie) of Douglas, GA, Matt Childers of Augusta, GA; daughter: Sally Murray (Calvin) of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren: Austin, Will, Kayla, Abbigale, Luke, Kylie, Laney and Jack; brother: Gene Childers, Sr.; and sister: Marian Stranahan.
The family wishes to thank the staff of University Hospital, 10 West for their loving care. He was a member of Warren Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 9, 2013 at 10:30 A.M. in the Chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son with Rev. Alan Faulkner officiating. Burial will be held in Woodville Baptist Church Cemetery in Woodville, GA at 1:30 P.M.
