Theron “Butch” Desmann Batzel of Evans, GA, formerly Stone Mountain, GA and Geneseo, NY, laid down his tools on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at the age of 91. He was the loving husband of Dorothy “Dottie” Templeton Howell Batzel.
As a corporal in the United States Army, he served in the Korean War. Butch was a 32nd degree Mason with the 692 Mountain View Masonic Lodge F&AM. He attended Ashland University and Georgia Tech studying engineering as well as Harvard University, where he studied finance. "Boots" was employed by Ashland for 47 years; his career progressing from a laborer up to Division President of the Southeast Region.
Butch was a devoted Christian who worshipped at Trinity on the Hill Global Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Adults, Couples and Singles Sunday School Class. As an avid golfer, he was a member of West Lake Country Club for 31 years.
He was the most loving and caring human being that anyone had the honor of meeting and will be missed every day. We will remember his legacy as a pillar of strength, wisdom, courage, duty, and honor distinguished by love and dedication to his country, family, and friends. Butch never met a stranger and was loved by all.
Family members in addition to his wife include his son: Theron Brian Batzel (Bridget); grandsons: Desmann (Jessica) and Dustin Batzel; siblings: Robert Batzel (Joan); step-grandson: Wyatt Wanniger (Calli), step-granddaughter: Ashlyn Wanniger and several nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by wife Geraldine “Geri” Leach Batzel; parents: Harold and Marilla (Desmann) Batzel; siblings: Donald Batzel (Shirley), M. Joyce Peri (Albert), M. Jean Bartlett (William) and Betty Fisher. Butch was also preceded in death by his daughters in law: Donna Conrad (Glen) and Lorie Wanniger (Ernie).
The family will receive friends on Saturday March 30, 2024, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. with a memorial service held immediately after in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors. Dr. Scott Hearn and Rev. Roy McVeigh officiating; eulogy by grandson Desmann Batzel and stepson Glen Conrad. Honorary pallbearers will be Gerald Jones, Andy Jones, Larry Clarkston, Sonny Gay and the Sunday school class. Interment will be private.
