Thomas Allen Huff., Sr. MD

Thomas Allen Huff, Sr., MD, (82) died March 19, after a long illness. He was born in Washington, DC, and attended high school in Forest, MS. After graduating from Southwestern at Memphis (now Rhodes College) with a BA, he received his MD at Emory Medical School and completed an internship and residency at Grady Hospital in Atlanta. Following two years in the U.S. Air Force, he went to Duke University for an endocrinology fellowship.

Spanning more than 50 years, Dr. Huff’s medical career began with a junior faculty position at Duke University. In 1971, he joined the faculty of the Medical College of Georgia, where he retired as Professor Emeritus. He served the American Diabetes Association in multiple capacities both locally and nationally. He was instrumental in developing a summer camp in Georgia for patients with juvenile diabetes. His many committee assignments at MCG included 12 years as the Chair of the Human Assurance Committee. Living a life of gratitude and generosity, Dr. Huff found great joy in the pursuit of knowledge and understanding. His compassion and commitment to patient care marked his medical career, both at the bedside and in the classroom.

Survivors include wife Anne Hixon Huff and children Laura Huff Hileman, Allen Huff (Marianne) Joseph Huff (Jodi), and David Huff (Susan). His ten grandchildren, Benjamin and Elizabeth Huff; John, William and Peter Hileman; Katherine, Thomas and Grace Huff; and Knox and Rachel Huff. He is also survived by sisters: Marcia de Bary (Edward), Tish Wilson, and brother-in-law John Hixon (Margaret), and extended family.

A memorial service will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church at 3:00 pm on Thursday, March 22, with the Rev. Holly Shoaf-O’Kula and the Rev. Stu Ritter officiating. A reception will follow the service.
