Augusta, GA - Thomas Wayne Jackson, MD 67, passed away on Monday March 20, 2023. He considered having met Hope Ann Bennighof his greatest stroke of good fortune. She became his wife for over 45 years.
He was a devoted father to their children: David, married to Ann Marie (née Cascio), Sarah, Anne, and Daniel, married to Darsey (née Ramirez) Jackson.
He also is survived by his grandchildren: Lillian and David Jr. as well as his sister Carol, brother Charles, and his 5 Jackson nieces and nephews.
Early childhood illnesses gave Tom a lifelong determination to become a doctor, which he saw as a practical way to be truly helpful to others. A close relationship with all four of his grandparents led him to geriatrics. which he practiced once he completed his training. While he could not be a physician to all his friends or family, he excelled at informally helping many by explaining how to understand medical information.
Born in Jacksonville, FL in 1955, he lived in the south, west, midwest, and northeast. He ultimately settled in the south. He graduated from Emory University in 1978 and received his MD from the Medical College of Georgia in 1982. He did postgraduate training at MCG and Duke University. He had a number of roles in geriatric medicine in Augusta and Columbia, South Carolina, and has worked for the past 10 years at the VA hospital in Augusta.
Tom never approached anything he did halfheartedly. Rather, his interests became an all-consuming passion, which echoed in the hearts of those who shared that love. At various points in his life, he was an avid photographer, pilot, student of Chinese cuisine, sci-fi aficionado, brew master, hunter, competitive shooter, and world traveler. This habit of sharing his joy in a pursuit with others made him many fast friends.
