Vera Thompson Elliott
Mrs. Vera Thompson Elliott moved to her forever home on Wednesday, New Year’s Day, January 1, 2025. She is singing, praising and worshipping Jesus. There will be no “resting in peace” as there will always be a place for her with the choirs praising and adoring God.
Vera was born on Broad Street in Augusta, GA to hard working parents, Robbie D and Mae Thompson. She grew up in Graniteville, SC and graduated in 1954 with a degree in music from Newberry College in Newberry, SC. During her time at Newberry she worked in multiple positions. Those include teaching private piano lessons during the school year and working at the Graniteville Company Mill during the summer months.
After moving back to Richmond County, where she would spend the majority of her life, she used her music degree continuously through teaching private piano. She had a stellar career with Richmond County’s public school music program. She raised her 3 children, Mike, Mark and Joy, with the same passion she had for music. Her most fulfilling service was to God and the local body by becoming the church pianist at the age of 12. She lead and performed in choirs at the Augusta Primitive Baptist Church for more than 50 years. The next few years were filled with faithful service as a dependable, smiling face as part of the Abilene Baptist Church choir for as long as she was physically able. Her last few years were spent at Warren Baptist Church and the Joy Sunday School Class.
Many of her thousands of former students still tell us of the impact she had on them, including her own son-in-law, who had her as his first music teacher in the 4th grade. Robert was able to call her “Mom” for 41 years. In addition to the impact on people musically, her Christian character impacted many more, especially her daughters-in-law, Susan and Tina. Vera had a special bond with each of her family members.
She was married for 59 years to Billy L. Elliott and is survived by her sons: Michael Elliott (Susan), Mark Elliott (Tina); daughter: Joy Hoover (Robert); 8 grandchildren: Jesse Elliott, Lindy Youngblood, Eli Elliott, Hannah Walden, Bethany O’Banion, Cameron Hoover, Rebekah Olsen and Ezra Elliott; 18 great grands. (Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from Him. Ps 127:3)
She never met a stranger and would give a hug whether she knew you or not. This was a family trait shared with her only sibling, Grady Thompson (d. 2014), with whom she had a strong bond. Along with his wife, Jan, many trips and special occasions were shared among the four. As Mom’s primary caregiver for the last several years, Jan’s sacrificial care will always be remembered.
The funeral service will be held Sunday, January 5, 2025 at 3:00 P.M. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son. Pastor Dave Dillard will officiate. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors, 214 Davis Rd., Augusta, GA 30907 (706) 364-8484. Please sign the guestbook at www.thomaspoteet.com
