Vernon Lee Sox, Jr.
Augusta, GA – Vernon Lee Sox, Jr. loving husband, father, and grandfather passed away Saturday, July 8, 2017. He was born August 13, 1930 to the late Vernon L. Sox, Sr. and Katherine Kaigler Sox in Columbia, SC.
Mr. Sox was preceded in death by his wife, Georgette Fraipont Sox, mother to his children Opal Powers Sox, brothers Archie (Florence) Sox and Kaigler (Bert) Sox, sisters Elizabeth Sox (Earl) Dupriest, Mildred Sox (James) Copeland, and Florence Sox (Neil).
He is survived by his daughter: Diane Sox (Randy) Thompkins; sons: Lee Powers Sox and Vernon L. Sox, III (Lynn); step-daughters: Monica Salyer (Hugh) Irwin and Sandy Salyer (Robbie) Hochman; 11 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren: sisters: Ara Sox Norton and Harriet Sox Corley. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
As a young man, Mr. Sox was a stellar athlete and lettered in several sports. After attending Palmetto Military Academy, he went on to serve in the South Carolina National Guard. Mr. Sox retired as a production supervisor at Dupont after 33 years. A longtime Aiken and New Ellenton area community leader, Mr. Sox was heavily involved in local politics and various civic groups. He also was a Master Mason, Scout Master, member of the Jaycees, coached youth athletic, and enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf, and cheering on the Gamecocks.
Mr. Sox was a devoted member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church where he served on the Board of Trustees.
A memorial service will be Friday, July 14, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.
