Augusta, GA – Mary Virginia Whiting Broome born January 25, 1919 to the late Paul R. Whiting and the late Emma Cody Whiting entered into rest Thursday, October 25, 2012 at Doctors Hospital of Augusta.

Mrs. Broome was born and Raised in Montgomery, Alabama and graduated from the University of Alabama in 1939. She was the President of the Alpha Gamma sorority. As the Alpha Gamma president she attended a semester at Auburn University and also Florida State to start their Alpha Gamma chapters. She remained a life long Alabama fan and regularly picked up the Alabama football games on an obscure AM radio station. Mrs. Broome made certain that her children knew all the words to the Alabama fight song.

Mrs. Broome married the love of her life, the late Jerome C. Broome in 1940 and in 1952 Jerome built a home for her in the country (McBean, GA). They raised their family in McBean, where she was a devoted mother of their three children. She remained in her home all of her 93 years with the help of her loving care giver Edith Brooks.

Mrs. Broome was an avid reader up until her last days. She kept apprised of national and world events and politics. She was also a sports enthusiast as she loved football, baseball and basketball.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years Lt. Col. Jerome C. Broome and her beloved identical twin sister Emily Joyce Hobbie. She is survived by two sons, Fred (Linda) Broome, Jim (Alice) Broome, and a daughter, Emily (Michael) Murrell, her half sister Elizabeth Heidemann. She was blessed with seven grandchildren; Alex Broome (Victoria), Katie Blunk (Craig), Lily Broome, James Broome, John Broome, Austin Lewis and Tori Lewis and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held Sunday, October 28, 2012 at 3:00 P.M. at the Broome Family Cemetery, 2152 Broome Road in McBean, GA. with The Reverend Dr. James B. Shumard officiating.
