Augusta, GA – Mr. Jennings Murphy, 91, went to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on June 19, 2012. Mr. Murphy, a native of Augusta, is predeceased by his loving wife of 63 years, Sarah Steadman Murphy; and his son Dr. Michael Jennings Murphy. He is survived by his daughter Mary Murphy Tabb (Ogden, Sr.) of Marietta, GA ; daughter-in-law: Judy Murphy Sechrist (Jim) of Augusta; 9 grandchildren: Audra Tabb James (Tom) of Marietta, Molly Tabb Peterka (Kenneth) of Marietta, Alison Murphy Tabb of Marietta, Corrie Tabb Madlem (Mark) of Atlanta, John Ogden Tabb, Jr. (Kelly) of Augusta, Jonathan Jennings Tabb (Carrie) of Roswell, GA, Patrick Jonathan Murphy of NY, Matthew Jonathan Murphy (Megan) of Augusta and Sarah Kathryn Murphy of Augusta and 19 great grandchildren.
Mr. Murphy, a WW II Navy veteran and founding partner of Murphy and Robinson Opticians, will be remembered for his Christian work in the community. He worked tirelessly as the Chairman of the Board of Augusta Christian Schools, the Augusta Servicemen’s Center; and the St. Johns Methodist Clarks Hill Lake ministry. He was a member of Bible Church of Augusta (formerly Druid Park Bible Church) and the Gideons International for over 60 years. Mr. Murphy was a member of Rotary of Augusta, was former Chairman of the Republican Party of Richmond County, and served as the Chairman of the Georgia State Board of Opticians under four Governors.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 23, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet and Son with Pastor Dewey M. Jones officiating. Interment will follow in Westover Memorial Park.
