Wallace “Mack” McLeod, Jr. MD

Augusta, GA – On January 20, 2011 heaven’s choir gained a new bass when Mack McLeod died at home, surrounded by family and friends after a hard fought battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 23, 2011 at 3:00 PM at First Baptist Church with Dr. Greg Deloach and Dr. Rodger Murchison presiding. A private interment will be held Monday in Westover Memorial Park.

Born in Atlanta on November 4, 1948, to Marilyn Cogburn McLeod and Wallace Norman McLeod, Mack went to The Westminster School in Atlanta. He attended Florida Presbyterian College (now Eckerd College) and graduated from Emory University. He entered the Medical College of Georgia in 1973 where he met classmate and future wife, Natalie Bowen. After graduation in 1977 he did a residency in Ophthalmology at MCG and went into solo practice in Augusta. In 1999 he joined forces with Drs. Brad Bertram, Ace Brown and Al Stocks to form Eye Physicians and Surgeons of Augusta. Mack considered himself lucky to be one of “The Eye Guys” and looked forward to work each day. This was reflected in the love shown to him by his patients and co-workers.

A family man who was devoted to his wife and loved to brag on his three children, Mack was a musician who played guitar and piano and loved to sing. He had previously sung with the choir at Trinity-on-the-Hill UMC and the Augusta Choral Society and was more recently a member of the choir at First Baptist Church of Augusta.

Mack was a proud member of the Board of Trustees of Augusta Preparatory Day School. He played an integral role in the success of the ”Framing the Future” Capital Campaign, and was always thinking of ways to help make Augusta Prep even stronger. He was also a member of American Society of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Georgia Society of Ophthalmology, and the GA Society of Ambulatory Surgical Centers. He was a licensed rowing official and had volunteered in that venue at the Atlanta Olympics.

A dedicated and vocal spectator of sports from football to women’s curling, Mack had become an avid cyclist over the past few years. He was also a supporter of the performing arts and loved to travel.


Dr. McLeod was predeceased by his daughter, Elizabeth Claire and his father, Wallace N. McLeod, Sr. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Natalie McLeod, his mother, Marilyn Cogburn McLeod, a son, Jeremy McLeod of Atlanta, and two daughters: Susannah McLeod, currently residing in Augusta and Caroline McLeod of Macon, and a brother, David McLeod and his wife, Valarie Harmon McLeod of Atlanta.

Pallbearers will be Cliff Eckles, Frank Vaughn, James Harris, Abram Serotta, Nick Butt, and Dave Alalof. Honorary pallbearers will be “The Eye Guys”- Drs. Brad Bertram, Ace Brown, Bruce Brown, Herb Fechter, Beau Gardner, Al Stocks, and Bill White.
