William Venus Means II (Bill) passed away in his home in Birmingham, Alabama on Thursday, April 11 at the age of 85. Bill is survived by wife, Donna White Means and children, William Venus Means III of Athens, GA (Donna), Bradley Dean Means of Augusta, GA (Juli), and Robert Hanbury Means of Evergreen, CO. He leaves 8 grandchildren: Will Means, Jena Means, Sam Means, Jack Means, Stanton Means, Violet Fox, Macy Metoyer (Bryan), Max Bagley, and great grandson Crew Wilson. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Maggie Means and nieces and nephews Margaret Cavin (Eric), Tripp Means (Jessica), Greig Means, and Virginia Hunt (Talmadge). He was predeceased by his father, Welch Earl Means Sr, mother Sadie Brown Hanbury, stepfather J.D. Hanbury, and brother Welch Earl Means.
Bill was born on April 28, 1938 in Jacksonville, Florida. He was the son of Welch Earl Means, Sr and Sadie and J.D. Hanbury. He graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville and attended Florida Southern University. Bill served in the United States Navy. He began his professional life as a journalist. He wrote an entertainment column for The Jacksonville Journal. Bill spent the majority of his career in real estate with Harris Real Estate, Stockton Whatley Davin, and Coldwell Banker. He served as president of the Jacksonville Board of Realtors and the West Duval Jaycees. He chaired the board of trustees at Riverside Baptist Day School and was a deacon at Riverside Baptist Church. He was a former member of Timuquana Country Club.
A funeral is scheduled for Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at 11:00 A.M., Mountain Brook Presbyterian Church with a reception to follow at 3839 Cotswold Drive North, Birmingham.
