William D. Hinson
Augusta, GA – William David (Bill) Hinson, 89 years of age, husband of 60 years to Thelma McKinley Hinson went to be with his Lord and Savior on April 29, 2016.
He was born in Bleckley County, GA on September 16, 1926 to the late John Bunyan and Della Garrett Hinson. Mr. Hinson joined the U.S. Army at the age of 17 and was a veteran of World War II.
He was a career locomotive engineer and supervisor on the railroad at the Savannah River Plant. He retired in 1993 after 42 ½ years of service. He was a lifelong Baptist and member of Curtis Baptist Church. He loved nature and being outdoors - taking care of his flowers and yard was a labor of love. He took pride in planting a vegetable garden each year and was a true farmer at heart. He was an avid follower of the news, weather and all things financial. He had an appreciation of history and his heritage, and he enjoyed sharing stories and events significant to his life. Jekyll Island, GA was his favorite vacation destination, visiting every year since the 1950’s.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and was proud of and dedicated to his entire family. He was a kind-hearted, generous and loyal friend to many. He will be forever missed.
He is survived by his wife, Thelma; daughter: Donna H. Murray (Todd Fulmer) of Augusta, GA; grandson: Robert Cameron Murray of Atlanta, GA; brother: Reverend Ronald Hinson (Irene) of Lavonia, GA; sisters: Betty Walsh of Pompano Beach, FL, Barbara Gaines (Gerald) of Marietta, GA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sons: Robert David (Bobby) Hinson and William Mark Hinson; brothers: W.B. Hinson of Albany, GA, Kelly Hinson of Moultrie, GA, and Rev. Gilbert Hinson of Sycamore, GA; and sisters: Pauline Collins of Fitzgerald, GA, Myrtice Thomas of Milan, GA, Bernice Campbell of Columbus, MS, Geraldine Thomas of Conyers, GA, and Deloris McNamara of West Mifflin, PA.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son with Rev. Ron Hinson, Jr. officiating. Burial will take place on Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. at Union Baptist Church Cemetery, Pitts, GA.
