William J. “Bill” Cooney

Augusta, GA – Entered into rest Thursday, September 13, 2012, Mr. William J. “Bill” Cooney, 83, husband of the late Martha W. Cooney.

Mr. Cooney was a graduate of Mt. St. Joseph in 1943, Boys Catholic High School in 1947, the University of Notre Dame in 1951, and Georgetown University Law School in 1955. Mr. Cooney was a US Army Captain, Judge Advocate, and General Corps. He served in Korea in the 8th Army Headquarters and also in the 6th Army Headquarters in San Francisco.

Mr. Cooney was an assistant US attorney in Washington D.C. and in San Francisco, CA. He was a private practice attorney in Augusta. He was a member of the Bar in Washington D.C., California, and Georgia. Mr. Cooney was past president of Uptown Kiwanis Club and was one of the founders of the West Lake Country Club.

Family members include daughter: Sarah Catherine Cooney Knight and husband Marty of Augusta; son: William J. Cooney IV and wife Marianna of Ft. Collins, CO; sisters: Catherine Joy Cooney of Washington D.C., Ellen Mulherin Cooney of Augusta, Jeanne Teresa Cooney of Augusta; brother: John F. Cooney, Jr. of Atlanta; and grandchildren: William J. Knight and Catherine Marie Cooney. He is preceded in death by his sister, Mary Cooney Rotchford.

A memorial mass will be held Saturday, September 15, 2012 at 1:00 P.M. at St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church with Rev. Scott Winchel celebrant. Interment will follow in Westover Memorial Park.
