William Thomas Neumann, M.D., F.A.C.P.
Augusta, GA – William “Bill” Thomas Neumann, M.D., F.A.C.P, 69, passed away peacefully in his home January 27, 2022. Bill was a loving husband to his wife, Debra Rhodes Neumann and to his sons Cortland Rice Lowe III (Lauren) and Jonathan Rhodes Lowe, both of Austin, Texas, William Tyson Neumann, and granddaughter Georgia Brynn Lowe. He is further survived by his brother Theodore Henry Neumann (Jan), of Milan, Tennessee, and sisters Kathryn Neumann Spinniken (Don), of Lake Leelenau, Michigan, Dr. Mary Neumann McDonald (Michael), and Dr. Martha Neumann Taylor (Stephen), both of Cordova Tennessee, and sister-in-law Kaye Rhodes Glover of Jacksonville, Florida, and a host of much-loved nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Dr. John Edward Neumann and Idabelle Nischwitz Neumann, daughter Annabelle Nicole Neumann, and brother John Edward Neumann, Jr.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, February 3, 2022 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church with Monsignor P. James Costigan, Celebrant. Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium. Bill was a longtime and faithful member of St. Mary’s.
Bill was a native of Paris, Tennessee. He received degrees in Chemistry and Microbiology from the University of Tennessee and entered medical school in the inaugural class of East Tennessee State University, following in the footsteps of his father, who was an Internist in Paris, Tennessee for over forty years.
Bill came to Augusta in 1982 where he completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia. After a year as the Medical Director of St. Joseph’s Hospital, he began practice as a sole practitioner until 2003 when Dr. Danny Newman joined him in practice. He and Dr. Newman joined MDVIP in 2016 and Bill remained a concierge physician until his retirement in 2021. Bill felt honored to care for the patients who entrusted their care to him. He cared deeply for his patients and during his more than nine years battling cancer, he rarely missed a day caring for them.
Bill was board certified in Internal Medicine and a Fellow in the American College of Physicians. He served as the Chief of Medical Staff at St. Joseph’s. He also served on the Board of Directors of the hospital for many years.
He was a member of the Richmond County Medical Society and many other social and civic organizations including the Augusta County Club and the Pinetucky Gun Club.
Bill was an avid sportsman who enjoyed golf, fishing, hunting and rooting for the Volunteers. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family and friends especially in his beloved mountain retreat in Western North Carolina.
