Martinez, GA – Entered into rest Thursday, February 9, 2012, Mr. William Rowe Holmes, Sr., 79, husband of 52 years to Henrietta Griffin Holmes.
Mr. Holmes was born in Bennettsville, SC to the late William H. Holmes and Margaret Rowe Holmes Martin and was raised in Augusta, GA. He served from 1950-1953 in the US Navy on the USS John R. Craig. He was a retired master mechanic from Colonial Baker. He loved watching the Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Falcons and the Georgia Bulldogs; he will be greatly missed by his family, friends and his dogs – Luckey, Molly, Clayton and Blondie.
Family members in addition to his wife include children: Pamela Holmes Simpson (Scott), William Rowe Holmes, Jr. (Liz), Todd Coleman Holmes and Tara Lynne Holmes; granddaughters: Amber Nicole Graff, Summer Elizabeth Graff, Caasi Marie Simpson, Melissa Jee Simpson, Alexis Taylor Holmes and Reagan Elizabeth Holmes; grandson: Wyatt Rowe Holmes; great-granddaughter: Sumera Nevaeh Graff; sister: Catherine Holmes; mother-in-law: Dorothy Griffin McBride. Mr. Holmes was preceded in death by sisters: Frances Barker and Margaret Dennis; brothers: John Holmes and Jimmy Holmes.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at Thomas Poteet & Son Chapel with Rev. Zach Claxton officiating. Interment will follow at Bellevue Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Paul Griffin, Dan Griffin, Ronald Griffin, Jimmy Griffin, David Griffin and Scott Simpson. Honorary pallbearers will be members of his coffee group, lunch group and lifelong friends.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 2607 Commons Blvd, Augusta, GA 30909 or to the Columbia County Humane Society, PO Box 204771, Martinez, GA 30917.
The family will receive friends Friday Night from 5:00 until 7:00. at
