Augusta, GA- Willam Kenneth (Bill) Washburn, 77, of Martinez went to be with the Lord on July 25, 2009 at Heartland Hospice, Augusta, Georgia. He was born on March 7, 1932 in Beaufort, SC.
He is survived by his loving wife Jenny Washburn of 49 years. They started their life together living in Augusta and then made homes in Alabama, Maryland, Virginia, Georgia, Florida, and then settled back in the Augusta area in 2001.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his sisters Alma Dean Williams of Amelia Island, Florida, Ann Trossbach of Dameron, Maryland, and sister-in-law Mary Alice Washburn of Savannah.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Sandy Washburn in 2005. He was also preceded in death by is father Earl Washburn, Sr, his mother Alma Sego Washburn Love, his stepfather Clarence Dow Love, his sisters Mrs. Mary Mercer, Mrs. Dorothy Smith, and his brothers Earl Washburn, Jr. and Clarence Love.
Mr. Washburn has been retired for several years however, he made his living working as a mechanical engineer for several firms and government agencies to include Patchen and Zimmerman of Augusta, Hamilton Watch Company of Baltimore, Bramco of Canton, Georgia, and the Department of Navy at Patuxent River Naval Air Station. He was a volunteer fireman in Lexington Park, Maryland. Mr. Washburn was disabled veteran having served in the U.S. Air Force.
During his life Mr. Washburn had many hobbies that included racing speed boats, roller skating, fishing, restoring vintage Mustangs, attending flea markets and yard sales, and woodworking. He made many hand carved horses, both carousel and rocking horses, and wooden model cars. He received a U.S. patent for a rocking horse he designed.
Pall bearers will be his nephews Tommy Mercer, Kenny Trossbach, Ronnie Washburn, Carl Washburn, Todd Mercer, Larry North and Doug Bean.
Funeral service will be held in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son Tuesday, July 28, 2009, at 11:00 AM with Trent Mercer officiating and internment following at Bellevue Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors, 214 Davis Rd., Augusta, GA 30907 (706) 364-8484.
