Wilma "Wil" London Anderson

Augusta, GA – Wilma “Wil” Evelyn London Anderson passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 11, 2022 at the age of 96.

Wil was born on August 20, 1925 in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. Her northeastern upbringing included time in New Brunswick, Canada and Houlton, Maine – where she often skied to school and her family’s pig was known for occasionally escaping across the Canadian border. These formative years laid the foundation for a life marked by adventure, independence, and curiosity.

She received an Associate’s Degree in Accounting from Meramec College in St. Louis, Missouri. As Chief of Finance for the VA Hospital, her career took her from the mountaintops of Colorado to the coast of California. She was exceptionally sharp, endlessly sophisticated, and her organizational skills were not to be challenged

She was a numbers-person, but she was also a people-person. She thrived on people. She wanted to learn all she could about them. She was a member of both the New Brunswick and Augusta genealogical societies, and her encyclopedic knowledge of family history would’ve been thoroughly helpful in writing this tribute.

Wil's passion for people and culture inspired her to explore the world – visiting all seven continents and making friends on each and every one. If you were around her for more than 15 minutes, you’ve likely heard stories of emperor penguins in Antarctica or safaris in Africa. Her map was among her most cherished possessions and days before her passing she still spoke of sailing the Mediterranean. Her sense of adventure was insatiable. And her animal-print blouses reflected that.

As her globetrotting days slowed down, she settled in Augusta, Georgia where she spent three decades playing an integral role in the lives of her children and grandchildren. Here she put her worldliness to use as a Travel Agent with the AAA Auto Club and proudly served as the Manager of the University Hospital Gift Shop and President of the Volunteer Board. She also acted as Vice President and President of the University Hospital Women’s Board, sat on the Board of Directors for the University Hospital Foundation, and flexed her financial expertise as Secretary and Treasurer of the Lake Forest Court Condominium Association.

Whether you called her Wil, Mrs. Anderson, Mom, Grandma, or Great Grandma, she was nothing short of an inspiration. Her constant wit will be deeply missed, but her vivacious spirit lives on in the hearts of every person who had the pleasure of knowing her. She continues to be dearly loved and will forever be a blessing to us all.

Family members include her son: Jimmy Anderson (Mary); daughter: Jane Parker (John); grandchildren: Taylor Anderson, III (Michelle), Katie Anderson, Taylor Becker (Haley); great grandchildren: Taylor Anderson, IV, Hampton Anderson, Lucy Becker and Beau Becker. Wil was preceded in death by her parents: John Henry and Pearle R. London; brother: Eugene Holley London and sister: Dorothy Wrena Few.

The family would like to express their deep appreciation to her caregivers and “genuine friends” at The Place on Pleasant Home Rd., as well as to the kind nurses on the 4th floor of the University Hospital Heart Tower and wonderful people at St. John Towers. In addition, Dr. Richard Whitlock, Dr. John Velky, and Dr. George Pursley for their continuous and compassionate care.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 14, 2022 at 2:30 P.M. in the chapel at Trinity on the Hill United Methodist Church with Rev. Richard Nevard officiating.
