Worley Pierson, Sr.
Augusta, GA—In the quiet of the morning Worley Pierson Sr. , 91, slipped away to his eternal resting place to be with his Savior and Lord Jesus Christ on February 10, 2020. His last words were: "I'm going home." He had held on bravely through five years of acute pain to celebrate the 100th birthday of his beloved wife, and to hold her hand on their 68th wedding anniversary.
He is predeceased by a cherished son, Worley Pierson Jr. Survivors include his wife Peggy, daughter Margaret Alligood (Larry); Tennessee sister, Georgia; grandchildren, Trip (Kelli) Pierson and Chris (Alison) Pierson; great-grandchildren Haley, Drew (Wesley), Jamie (Emily) and great-great grandson, Lennon.
Worley Pierson Sr. loved his country and served proudly in the United States Army for 21 years. His reminisced often about his service in the Korean War, particularly with Mash Units 8055, 8063 and 8076. Before his death he wanted to make sure these brave soldiers were mentioned. Many sacrificed their lives in honor of our country and he never forget them.
After serving 21 years in the Army, Mr. Pierson became a civil service employee at both the VA and Eisenhower hospitals in Augusta, working as a medical equipment technician specializing in EKG machines.
He and his family would like to thank the entire staff of the Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home for their care during the last six years of his life. You did not let this soldier down and saw to every medical need that this veteran deserved.
Mr. Pierson lived a humble yet magnificent life. Born into poverty, he often went hungry as a boy. When he turned 17, he entered the Army and began sending money home to his family. During his time in Korea, his unit was frequently positioned near combat lines, with bombs dropping near his tent. He never talked about the war. The family only learned of this from finding notes he had written to himself years ago.
Also found after his death was a small notebook in which he recorded savings from every paycheck that were designated to purchase gifts for his children and a memorable trip to Disney World.
He was thankful to God and Jesus. Through his actions he taught his children that honesty is always the best policy because that showed the world the depth of your character. By example he taught the value of hard work and resolve to always be free of debt. His main priority was to be a good family man and a stellar citizen. He was a man of integrity and was, at all times, tender to his bride of almost 69 years, Peggy. He never rested a day in his life until he knew her needs were met.
Mr. Pierson enjoyed many hobbies. He was an avid golfer and taught many how to play. Besides being with his wife and family his most enjoyable time was spent on the golf course with his son, grandsons, his "one of the family" nephew, Bob Pierson, and close family friends: the Bishops, Crouches, Rick Chancey and Greg Miller.
He also loved farming, gardening, fishing, restoring classic cars, boating, bingo with his brother (James) and karaoke with Bob. He was a longtime member of the Martinez Masonic Lodge #710.
One of Mr. Pierson's last wishes was to make sure this memorial included a thank you to his son-in-law, Larry Alligood, for all he had done for he and Peggy as they declined in health. Larry Alligood took care of him for more than eight years as though he were his own father tending to every need with agape tender, patient, selfless love. Such unconditional love they had never experienced before. The caretaking included transporting him to visit his wife Peggy, who lived at a separate caretaking residence. Larry cooked a full course turkey dinner for their last Christmas together which they enjoyed at Peggy's place. It was a good day for Mr. Pierson. He was thrilled to hold his beloved wife's hand on what would be their final Christmas together.
The daughter offers special thanks to the following people who helped make Mr. Pierson's painful final years more bearable:
Bob for enjoying being his family, singing karaoke with him and being there for him for answering emergency calls at Mr. Pierson's request and being an honorary godson to the very end.
Longtime family friends Stan Crouch, Susan Bishop, Melony Carter and Greg Miller for visiting him on behalf of others long gone.
Theresa Hall and Tamara Morgan for driving he and his brother, James, to see for a final time the beautiful rolling hills of Tennessee where they both were born and to visit with relatives including his sisters, Mae (Bill) and Georgia. Thanks also to Lyrecia for making a long trip to bring his sister to see him during his final season in life.
Another special memory was he and Peggy's 50th wedding anniversary, where he danced with his daughter, Margaret. The song was his favorite, Tennessee Waltz.
At Mr. Pierson's wish - his memorial & life celebration will be held at a future undetermined date with his direct family.
In lieu of flowers Mr. Pierson asked that donations be made to the Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home 1101 Fifteenth Street Augusta, Georgia 30901.
